This is not far from Pasadena. When the compiler was six years old, we spent a winter at Sierra Madre. There was nothing there but the hotel, surrounded by orange groves--and upon the bluff, the Rhoades Ranch. We had forty days of rain--the last person to cross the raging aurora was a man who made it but his horse was drowned. No telephone or telegraph communication. It was not very far to the well-known, San Gabriel Mission. One Sunday mother drove our nursemaid in for service. It was very cold; the service lasted two and a half hours and Annie McDermott was the only white person there, sitting on a bench and kneeling constantly on cold, bare stone floor. She did not ask to go again. This was the winter of 1884-5.
